Repair Your Body After an Accident

The Government of Alberta recommends that you visit a primary health care practitioner as soon as possible after an accident to assess your injuries and get treatment advice. Getting a professional opinion is one of the best ways to make sure you get the treatment you need and the coverage you’re entitled to.

Why Treatment After a Car Accident is Important

A car accident can happen in an instant and lead to a lifetime of pain if left untreated. Early treatment can make sure you get the care and insurance benefits you need. When you come in for motor vehicle accident treatment, we can assess your injury and recommend physiotherapy, chiropractic, or massage therapy treatments to suit your needs, as well as help you navigate the claims process.

The Treatment Process

First, we make sure you have completed all the appropriate documentation for insurance, such as the AB-1 form (Notice of Loss and Proof of Claim Form), so we can complete the AB-2 form (Treatment Plan Form) for you. To complete the AB-2, a physiotherapist or chiropractor will conduct a full assessment of your injury, pain, or concern. Be prepared to discuss any past injuries, medical history, and any medications you take, so we have a full understanding of your health. We’ll also discuss your goals from treatment and how we can help optimize your quality of life.

Upon completion of assessment your claim will either be deemed to be within or outside of Alberta Diagnostic Treatment Protocols (DTPR).

If you are covered by DTPR, your therapist will discuss the number of treatments you’ll be authorized for and your insurer will be billed directly for your treatments. Authorization expires 90 days after the motor vehicle accident unless the insurer approves use of the DTPR beyond 90 days. Typically, you’ll qualify for between 10 and 21 treatments.

If you are not covered under DTPR (Section B), the priority of payment specifies that an insurer is the second payer after both extended health benefits (e.g. Blue Cross or similar employee benefit plans with health spending accounts) and Alberta Health Care Insurance. The number of treatments are determined on a case by case basis.

Your personalized plan of care outlines your treatment over the coming weeks. We’ll discuss what treatments we’ll be using and why, so you fully understand the process. After you understand your personalized plan of care, we’re ready to begin your treatments.

Everybody is different, and many factors can influence healing. We continuously reassess your progress throughout your treatment to make sure it’s right for you. If expected progress isn’t being made, we’ll adapt your treatment as soon as possible to make sure you get the relief you need. All assessments will be sent to your insurance provider.

Frequently Asked Questions

You still get accident benefit coverage whether you are at fault or not. However, your benefit coverage will vary depending on your injury.

You don’t need a doctor’s referral or insurance approval to get treatment for sprains, strains, or whiplash resulting from a car accident.

If your injury is a sprain, strain, or whiplash, we will be able to bill your insurer directly as long as you have filled out the Notice of Loss and Proof of Claim Form (AB-1) within 10 days of the accident. For other types of injuries, you may have to submit expenses to your health benefits plan first and wait for reimbursement.
