More than Relaxation

Massage is often thought of as a way to relax, but massage therapy can be much more than that. Massage therapy is performed by massage therapists who are specially trained to evaluate and treat your muscles, connective tissue, tendons, and ligaments. Using pressure and movement, your massage therapist can help reduce stress, pain, and muscle tension.

How Massage Therapy Can Help You

Massage therapy is a complementary and integrative treatment option. It’s often recommended as part of a treatment plan for back pain, sports injuries, muscle pain, and even surgical recovery. If you have a source of pain, our massage therapists will create a treatment plan tailored to you and the pain you’re experiencing.

The Massage Therapy Process

Everyone has different needs, so we tailor our approach to you.

We begin with a full assessment of your injury, pain, or reason for seeking treatment. Be prepared to discuss any past injuries, medical history, and any medications you are currently taking. It’s important for your massage therapist to know if you’re pregnant, have a bleeding disorder, or any other type of medical condition that may affect your treatment.

We’ll also discuss your goals from treatment and how we can help optimize your quality of life. Finally, we’ll do a full exam of your injury or problem area to get to the root of the issue.

After the initial assessment, we’ll have a good idea of what is causing your pain. We’ll identify the problem and educate you on your treatment plan. We make sure you’re fully involved in your treatment plan because patients who are more involved often experience better treatment outcomes.

Your personalized plan of care outlines your treatment over the coming weeks. We’ll discuss what treatments we’ll be using and why, so you fully understand the process. After you understand your personalized plan of care, we’re ready to begin your treatments.

Every body is different, and many factors can influence healing. We continuously reassess your progress throughout your treatment to make sure you’re getting the right treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Massage therapy can be a complementary treatment for many sources of pain. Some studies have shown that massage therapy can help with:

  • Anxiety
  • Digestive disorders
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Headaches
  • Stress-related insomnia
  • Myofascial pain syndrome
  • Soft tissue strains or injuries
  • Muscle strains or injuries
  • Sports injuries
  • Temporomandibular joint pain (TMD or TMJ)

There are many different types of massage that range from relaxing to somewhat uncomfortable. Some people find deep tissue massage uncomfortable, for example, as it involves using more pressure to treat long-lasting muscle tension.

Your massage therapist will tailor their approach (and the heaviness of their hand) to your needs. If you prefer a lighter touch or feel that your therapist is pressing too hard, please let them know so they can adjust their pressure accordingly.

You do not need a referral to visit us for massage therapy. However, some insurance plans require a doctor’s referral for massage therapy to be covered. Be sure to review your insurance policy for coverage details.

Many health insurance plans that include paramedical benefits include massage therapy. Be sure to review your insurance policy for coverage and requirements (such as a doctor’s referral).
