Managing Osteoarthritis With GLA:D

Living with hip and knee osteoarthritis (OA) can lead to stiffness and pain if it isn’t treated and managed correctly.

Running Shoe Restorative Healthcare is an official partner with GLA:D Canada, an international program that works with Bone and Joint Canada as well as the Canadian Orthopaedic Foundation. Running Shoe Restorative Healthcare aims to add mobility to your life through the educational exercise program designed by GLA:D Canada. This evidence-based program has helped thousands of people manage the symptoms of pain and loss of function associated with hip and knee OA.

Running Shoe Restorative Healthcare can help you determine if this program is right for you.

What Does GLA:D Do?

The education and training provided through GLA:D works to strengthen your hips and knees and improve mobility during the program and in everyday life.

Running Shoe Restorative Healthcare uses the GLA:D program to help you achieve more daily comfort from your hip and knee OA symptoms.

The GLA:D Program

Once you have received a recommendation that GLA:D is appropriate for you, Running Shoe Restorative Healthcare can get you started on the GLA:D program. To provide the best results, GLA:D participants attend group sessions to help motivate them through their osteoarthritis journey. Evidence shows that people who participate in group sessions see the best improvements.

In some cases, individuals who are highly active or have less ability may benefit from individual programs.

Participants learn all about OA in 2 education sessions. Topics include how joints degenerate over time, how exercise can help benefit joint stability, and how that stability can be retrained using day-to-day management techniques outside of the GLA:D program.

Improving your mobility and reducing OA symptoms is assisted by neuromuscular exercises that are completed twice a week for six weeks. You will learn how to include new exercises into your daily activities to help increase your muscle stabilization.

Each training session includes a warmup, circuit training, and a cool-down.

Circuit training focuses on 4 main components:

  • Stabilizing and strengthening the core abdominal area
  • Proper posture in keeping weight placed over the leg
  • Strengthening the muscles in the leg
  • Functional training to improve mobility

The GLA:D program measures how you’re doing at your first visit, and then again 3 and 12 months after you have started the program. This information will help us monitor how the program is working for people with osteoarthritis all over Canada.
