Regaining Your Health After COVID

Some people may experience long-term lingering health conditions for weeks or months after contracting the virus. At Running Shoe Restorative Healthcare, we want to get you back on your feet and provide you with the treatment and tools that could help you get there successfully.

Although long-covid care is still in its infancy, it has been preliminarily defined by The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence has defined long-covid as: signs and symptoms that develop during or after a COVID-19 infection that continue for 12 weeks or more. These symptoms include ongoing symptomatic COVID-19 (4-12 weeks) and are not explained by an alternative diagnosis.

Long after COVID-19 has left their body, many people continue to experience:

  • Post viral fatigue & post-exertional malaise
  • Difficult or laboured breathing
  • Headaches
  • Chest tightness/pain
  • Lung pain or burning sensation
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Cough and/or sore throat
  • Tinnitus and/or earaches
  • Increased body temperature
  • Diarrhoea and/or gastrointestinal disturbances
  • Heart palpitations and/or increased heart rate
  • Burning trachea (throat)
  • Depression and/or anxiety
  • Weakness, numbness, and pain (peripheral neuropathy)
  • Cognitive impairment (issues with concentration or memory)

There are many people who could benefit from physiotherapy and psychology to help them cope with the lingering effects of COVID-19.

Long-covid isn’t necessarily correlated with hospitaliations or the severity of the origins; COVID-19 infection. Evidence is showing that those with mild infection severity can also suffer from long-covid symptoms, often with psychological and social impacts.

We’re here to take care of your body and mind through your recovery.

We can work on physiotherapy while monitoring your vitals to help decrease your recovery time.

Post ICU:

  • Strengthening, conditioning, and endurance training for those with ICU-acquired muscle weakness or deconditioning
  • Retraining for respiratory muscle weakness

Respiratory management:

  • Breathing retraining and techniques, restoring proper breathing patterns and functional breathing like diaphragmatic breathing, inspiratory muscle training)
  • Cough management and airway clearance techniques


  • Deciphering if post-exertional malaise may be present and educating on pacing and heart-rate monitoring. If post-exertional malaise is ruled out, exercise may be prescribed for deconditioning while monitoring vitals.

Neurocognitive dysfunction:

  • Utilization of treatments commonly implemented with our concussion clients for memory, attention, concentration, “brain fog,” and headaches

Musculoskeletal Pain Management:

  • Chronic and persistent pain management
  • Mobility work
  • Exercise prescription is post-exertional malaise is ruled out

Many who are sick with COVID-19 experience isolation, which can lead to further psychological health conditions. We are here to help you navigate your way through isolation, anxiety, and depression.

Psychology services are available:

  • Breathing techniques
  • Pacing techniques
  • Coping strategies for life changes
  • Relaxation techniques

In April 2021 the Coronavirus Infection Survey showed that 1.1 million people who had COVID-19 reported long-covid symptoms. From that group, more than 60% said their symptoms adversely affected their day-to-day activity levels, and 17.9% reported a limited ability to undertake day-to-day activities.
